Women’s Basketball Falls in Battle Against Seahawks

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (February 21, 2024) - The St. Thomas University (STU) Women's Basketball team hosted Keiser University on Wednesday evening for the second time this season. The Bobcats fell to the Seahawks 62-66 in the battle, bringing them to 9-4 in Sun Conference play and putting them in a tie for second place in the conference.  

The Seahawks started off hot in the match up, but the Bobcats quickly made their way back on top. Brooke Bogatz kicked off the first quarter of the game with six points and three rebounds. Paige Mcdonald also scored six points and picked up two rebounds. The Bobcats led by five heading into the second quarter, outscoring the Seahawks 19-14. 

Bogatz and McDonald continued their drives into quarter two. Bogatz picked up four more points, finishing the quarter with 10, while McDonald added seven to her tally and four more rebounds, putting her at 13 points for the half. Ra'Nae Tumblin and Bria Brown also had a successful quarter, putting up five points each. The Seahawks managed to outscore the Bobcats 23-21 in quarter two, but the Bobcats remained in the lead with a score of 40-37 heading into intermission. 

Marta Franco began her scoring drive, putting up five points in the third quarter. Brown remained a key player on the court, notching three more points and four rebounds in quarter three. Keiser outscored St. Thomas by three in the third quarter, 14-11. The score was tied 51-51 heading into the final quarter. 

Franco put up five more points in the final quarter, bringing her total to 13 for the game. Franco also added four rebounds in the fourth. McDonald added five rebounds to solidfy her double-double performance against the Seahawks, finishing with 16 points and 12 rebounds. Tumblin and Brown each added three points, both ending the game in double figures, Brown with 13 points and Tumblin with 10. The Seahawks were able to outscore the Bobcats in the final quarter 15-18. St. Thomas ultimately fell to Keiser 66-62. 

Up next, the Bobcats will travel to Babson Park, Fla. to face off against the Webber International University Warriors for their last match of regular season play. The game will take place on Saturday, February 24th at 2 p.m.
