MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (February 27, 2024) - The St. Thomas University (STU) Women's Basketball team faced Webber International University for the third time this season to kick off Sun Conference Tournament play. The Bobcats defeated the Warriors 78-55, earning them a spot in the semifinals of the Sun Conference Tournament.
Despite the Warriors taking the lead first, the Bobcats did not let them have it for long. Brooke Bogatz began her drive, scoring seven points in quarter one alone. Marta franco put up four points as well, kickstarting her success against the Warriors. St. Thomas managed to outscore their opponents 18-9. Despite facing some defensive pressure, St. Thomas maintained their composure to set the tone for the rest of the game.
In the second quarter, both teams battled fiercely, with St. Thomas managing to extend their lead. Paige McDonald stepped up for St. Thomas, contributing 4 points to help maintain their momentum. Although Webber managed to narrow the gap, St. Thomas remained resilient, ending the quarter with a 31-16 advantage, heading into halftime with a comfortable lead.
The third quarter saw St. Thomas assert their dominance once again, with Franco leading the charge with an impressive 15 points. Supported by contributions from Bogatz and McDonald, St. Thomas outscored Webber 29-18 in the quarter, further extending their lead and putting themselves in a commanding position heading into the final quarter.
Despite a spirited effort from Webber to mount a comeback in the final quarter, St. Thomas maintained their composure and held onto their lead. Damia Woolcock and Madison Lippy provided crucial points for St. Thomas, ensuring they secured the victory. Although Webber managed to outscore St. Thomas in the final quarter, their efforts were not enough to overcome the deficit, resulting in a 78-55 victory for St. Thomas. Franco finished the game with an impressive 21 points, while Bogatz and McDonald added 12 and 14 points respectively.
Up next, the Bobcats will head to Lakeland, Fla. on Friday, March 1st for a 5:00 p.m. matchup against the Southeastern University Fire.
