LAKELAND, Fla. (March 15, 2024) - The St. Thomas University (STU) Softball team kicked off Sun Conference play on Friday afternoon with a road matchup against Southeastern University. The Bobcats took to the field and defeated the Fire in game one, 4-2, bringing their record to 18-1.
The game erupted into action in the first inning.
Anna Toon led the charge with a swift single to left field, driving in
Mya Achenbach who scored the first run of the game.
Gabriella Gilbert followed suit with a powerful hit up the middle, bringing Toon home. An error by Southeastern's second baseman allowed yet another run to score, giving St. Thomas an early 3-0 lead.
The St. Thomas defense, led by Toon's pitching, proved to be a formidable barrier, shutting down Southeastern's attempts to score. Toon notched six strikeouts during the game, securing the victory for the Bobcats and adding another win to her undefeated pitching record. In the third inning,
Destiny Falquez of St. Thomas electrified the field with a home run, extending her team's lead to 4-0. The St. Thomas supporters erupted into cheers, their confidence soaring as they looked poised to secure another victory. The Fire attempted to make a comeback scoring two runs in the bottom of the seventh, but they were unsuccessful in taking the lead.
The Bobcats ultimately emerged victorious, with a final score of 4-2. Up next, the Bobcats will continue their series against the Fire on Saturday, March 16th with a double header. The first game will take place at 12 p.m. followed by a 2 p.m. match up.
