Softball Secures 12th Straight at Space Coast Games

MELBOURNE, Fla. (March 1, 2024) - The St. Thomas University (STU) Softball team traveled back to Melbourne, Fla. To face the University of Michigan-Dearborn and Goshen College on Friday afternoon for day two of the Space Coast Games. The Bobcats defeated both teams, keeping their undefeated streak alive with 12 straight wins.  

Game #1: Michigan-Dearborn: 

The Bobcats extended their undefeated streak as they secured a hard-fought victory against Michigan-Dearborn with a final score of 5-4. From the onset, St. Thomas demonstrated their offensive prowess, setting the tone for the game with a strong start in the first inning. Mya Achenbach proved instrumental in igniting their offense, contributing a solid hit that propelled her team to an early lead. 

Natalie Kopicova in center field and Destiny Falquez at third base displayed exceptional skill both defensively and offensively, driving in crucial runs and keeping the pressure on Michigan-Dearborn's defense. Melody Vizcaino delivered a standout performance on the mound, stifling Michigan-Dearborn's offense and securing the win for her team. Anna Toon also had stellar offensive contributions, including a crucial triple that helped propel St. Thomas to victory. Gabriella Gilbert and Bianca Palacios also made significant contributions to St. Thomas' offensive effort, delivering key hits and driving in runs to keep their team ahead on the scoreboard.  

Game #2: Goshen College: 

The St. Thomas softball team emerged victorious in a matchup against Goshen. With a final score of 3-0, St. Thomas secured another impressive win in their 2023-24 season campaign. 

The game began with both teams showcasing their defensive strength, preventing any runs from being scored in the early innings. As the game progressed, St. Thomas began to assert themselves offensively, mounting pressure on the Goshen defense. In the pivotal sixth inning, St. Thomas broke the deadlock. Bianca Palacios ignited the scoring spree with a powerful double to center field, driving in Gabriella Gilbert and putting St. Thomas on the scoreboard. Mya Achenbach drew a crucial walk with the bases loaded, bringing home Palacios and extending St. Thomas' lead. Destiny Falquez contributed to the scoring effort with another walk, allowing Jade Fayad to cross home plate and solidify St. Thomas' lead. 

Anna Toon delivered a standout performance on the mound. Toon, who improved her record to 8-0 with the win, showcased her command and composure, stifling the Goshen offense and tallying an impressive eight strikeouts. With this victory, St. Thomas extends their undefeated streak to 12-0.  

Up next, the Bobcats will continue their competition at the Space Coast Games, facing Roosevelt and Cornerstone on Tuesday, March 5th.
