Cimino and Velazquez Break Records in Victory Over FNU

MIAMI GARDENS Fla. (August 30, 2024) - After two hours of stormy weather rolled through Miami Gardens, the (RV) St. Thomas University (STU) Women's Soccer team took to AutoNation Field to face off against the Conquistadors of Florida National University. The Bobcats did not let the weather delay stop their momentum, defeating FNU 6-0 and breaking records in the process.

The Bobcats dominated the Conquistadors to start the game off, with 11 shots in the first half and three corners. Gabi Cimino put the Bobcats on the board in the 22nd minute of the first half, beginning her quest for most goals scored in a single game. Within a minute, Megan Velazquez followed Cimino's lead, finding the back of the net off an assist from Bryanna Alzate, to put the Bobcats up two.

The success didn't stop at halftime. Within a 10 minute period between the 60th and 70th minutes of the game, Cimino managed to score four more goals, all of which were assisted by Velazquez. Cimino finished the match up with a total of five goals, tying the STU record for most goals scored in a single game which is currently held by Sara Mira, Melony Poviones, and Head Coach Michelle Smith. Velazquez finished the game with four assists, breaking the STU record for most assists recorded in a single game, which previously sat at three.

The Bobcats held the Conquistadors off for the rest of the half, with Isabella Penaranda earning two saves and notching another shutout win to kick off the season. This victory brings the Bobcats' record to 2-0. STU will head to Illinois over the weekend to face off against University of St. Francis and Judson University.
