(RV) Women's Soccer Keeps Streak Alive in Battle of Miami Gardens

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (September 21, 2024) - The (RV) St. Thomas University (STU) Women's Soccer team faced off in their first Battle of Miami Gardens of the season, defeating Florida Memorial University 2-1 with two late goals from captains Gabi Cimino and Megan Velazquez. The Bobcats earned their 20th straight win against the Lions, keeping their undefeated streak alive and bringing their overall record to 4-0-2.

The Bobcats managed to dominate offensively in the first half, with 12 shots to the Lions two. Florida Memorial managed to sneak one past goalkeeper Isabella Penaranda in the 33rd minute, putting the Bobcats behind 0-1. St. Thomas was unable to get on the board as they entered the half.

The Bobcats did not give up as they entered half two. They notched 14 shots in the second half, bringing their total to 26 in the match up. Seven shots came from Cimino, while Velazquez notched five of her own. Sammiah Dorelus also put up four shots as the Bobcats attempted to mount a comeback. The Lions held the lead until the 82nd minute, when Cimino put the Bobcats on the board to tie up the match. Velazquez notched the assist. The dynamic duo continued in the 85th minute, when Velazquez put the Bobcats in the lead with a goal of her own, and Cimino picked up an assist. Cimino currently leads the team in goals and shots with nine goals and 54 shots while Velazquez leads the team in assists with nine. Penaranda notched three saves to bring her total to 24 in the 2024 season thus far.

The Bobcats kept the lead for the remaining five minutes of the game, earning their victory. This win brings the Bobcats' overall record to 4-0-2, and their conference record to 2-0. Up next, STU will host Ave Maria University on Wednesday, September 25th, before heading to West Palm Beach, Fla. for a match up against Keiser University at September 28th.
