(RV) Women's Soccer Match Up Ends in Draw Against Gyrenes

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla (September 25, 2024) - The (RV) St. Thomas University (STU) Women's Soccer team faced off against Ave Maria University on Wednesday evening in their first match up of the season. The match ended in a 1-1 draw against the Gyrenes, keeping the Bobcats' unbeaten with an overall record of 4-0-3 and a conference record of 2-1.

Both teams kicked off the match hot, each notching a corner kick in the first 10 minutes, battling to be the first team on the board. The Bobcats put up eight shots in the first half, along with four corner kicks as they attempted to net one. Despite their offensive success, the game remained scoreless entering the intermission. 

The Bobcats kept the momentum going in the second half, notching four shots in the first eight minutes of the second half. The Gyrenes managed to get on the board first in the 56th minute, bringing the score to 1-0. The Bobcats were quick to respond, with a goal just two minutes later in the 58th minute of the match. The goal came from Carolina de Vega who was assisted by Dayanara Monetti. The Bobcats kept fighting to take the lead, notching 15 shots in the second half. Gabi Cimino led the charge with five shots, followed by Megan Velazquez and Sammiah Dorelus who each picked up four of their own. The Bobcats finished with a total of 23 shots. St. Thomas held the Gyrenes to one goal, Isabella Penaranda picking up four saves. Neither team was able to take the lead, ending the match in a 1-1 draw.

Up next, the Bobcats will head to West Palm Beach, Fla. to face off against Keiser University. The match up will take place on Saturday, September 28th at noon.
