Bobcats Notch First Win of 2025 Against Mariners

BRUNSWICK, Ga. (January 4, 2025) - The St. Thomas University (STU) Women's Basketball team notched their first victory of the new year on Saturday afternoon, defeating the College of Coastal Georgia 54-47. Jasmine Worthy and Maddie Scharrenberg led the team for the Bobcats, recording double digit points to help improve STU's record to 8-5, and their Sun Conference record to 3-1.

St. Thomas took the lead in quarter one, outscoring the Mariners 12-7 in the first 10 minutes. Joey Delancy and Jasmine Worthy each picked up four points for the Bobcats in quarter one. Although St. Thomas held onto the lead, quarter two saw the Mariners outscoring the Bobcats by one point. Maddie Scharrenberg and Sophie Vandyke took charge in quarter two, each adding four points to the Bobcats' tally, Vandyke picking up four rebounds as well. St. Thomas led 23-19 heading into the halftime break.

The Bobcats continued to hold onto the lead in the second half, picking up 18 points in quarter three and earning their largest lead of the game with 13 points on the Mariners. Samantha Vales notched five points in favor of the Bobcats while Worthy continued her run, entering double figure territory with six more points. Worthy kept going into the the final quarter of the game, recording seven points and five rebounds for the Bobcats to finish with another doubnle-double performance with a total of 17 points and 10 rebounds. Scharrenberg also notched six points in the second half, finishing the game with 13. Despite Coastal Georgia's best efforts, they were unable to take the lead against St. Thomas. The Bobcats emerged victorious with a final score of 54-47.

Up next, the Bobcats will return home for a match up against Florida National University on Tuesday, January 7th at 6 p.m. in the Fernandez Family Center.
