MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (February 15, 2025) - It was a boisterous afternoon in Miami Gardens as the St. Thomas University (STU) Women's Basketball team traveled down the road to face off against Florida Memorial University in round two of the Battle of Miami Gardens. After a lot of back-and-forth and 25 points from
Maddie Scharrenberg, the Bobcats ultimately fell to the Lions, 71-86.
The Bobcats were the first on the board in the FMU Wellness Center, with Maddie Scharrenburg scoring right off the tip. Scharrenberg went on a stellar run in quarter one, scoring 11 points just seven minutes into the game. The Bobcats were only down five heading into the second. St. Thomas had a strong second quarter, scoring 23 points to Florida Memorial's 26. They went 50% in free throws and 50% from beyond the arc, with Scharrenberg and
Joey Delancy each putting up eight points. The Bobcats trailed by eight at the end of the half, 49-41.
The third quarter saw an evenly matched quarter, with the Bobcats outscoring the Lions 15-14. Delancy stood out in the third, putting up five more points. The Lions took the lead and ran in the final quarter, scoring 23 points and holding the Bobcats to 15.
Jaliyah Weekes played a major role in the final quarter, notching nine points, going 100% from the field and 3-4 in free throws. The Bobcats were defeated by the Lions, 86-71 in the match, bringing the Bobcats to an overall record of 16-8 and conference record of 10-4.
