Bobcats Take Down Gyrenes on Senior Day

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (February 19, 2025) - The St. Thomas University (STU) Women's Basketball team hosted Ave Maria University on Wednesday evening for their last regular season home meeting of the season. The Bobcats honored their seniors: Naeve Duarte, Ra'Nae Tumblin, Jasmine Worthy, and Sophie Vandyke prior to the game, and ultimately defeated the Gyrenes 60-54.

It was a close contest from the first whistle, the Gyrenes leading by two at the end of quarter one. Maddie Scharrenberg led the charge for St. Thomas with six points in the first quarter, going 100% in field goals. The Bobcats went on to outscore Ave Maria in quarter two, 14-11. Madison Lippy picked up seven points for the Bobcats, marking the start of her double figure performance. STU led by one point, 28-27 at the end of the half.

The game remained a tight race in the second half, the Gyrenes picking up 20 points in quarter three compared to the Bobcats 19, tying up the score at the end of the quarter. Jaliyah Weekes had an impressive run in the third, recording 10 points for the Bobcats, going 100% in field goals and 4-5 in free throws. Vandyke was strong on the defense, adding two more rebounds and two blocks in the quarter. She ultimately finished with 14 rebounds and five blocks in the game. 

The Bobcats held the Gyrenes to a single digit performance in the final quarter, outscoring them 13-7 to secure the lead. Lippy and Scharrenberg added more points to their tally in the final quarter, finishing the game with 15 and 13, respectively. St. Thomas took down Ave Maria in the end, 60-54. This win brings the Bobcats record to 17-8 overall and 11-4 in Sun Conference play, tying them up with Keiser University for the third place spot behind Southeastern University and Florida Memorial University.

Up next, the Bobcats will travel to Sarasota, Fla. for their final meeting of the regular season against New College of Florida. The meeting will take place on Saturday, February 22nd at 2 p.m.
