Walk-Off Victory! Bobcats Defeat Evangel in NAIA Opening Round in Extra Innings

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. (May 12, 2025) - The #17 St. Thomas University (STU) Softball team faced off against Evangel University (Mo.) on Monday afternoon on day one of the NAIA Opening Round in Lawrenceville. The Bobcats fought for 10 hard innings, pulling out the victory on a walk-off single from Anna Toon, securing the 3-2 victory over the Valor.

Highlights: St. Thomas 3, Evangel 2 (10 innings)
  • The Valor were the first on the board in the top of the first inning, scoring one run on a St. Thomas error.
  • The Bobcats were able to take the lead in the bottom of the first. Anna Toon kicked it off with a single to center field that brought home Mya Achenbach to tie it up. 
  • Isabella Andujar then hit a single to center, advancing Bianca Palacios and bringing Toon home to put the Bobcats in the lead, 2-1.
  • St. Thomas held the lead until the top of the fifth when Evangel found the equalizer, making the score 2-2.
  • The game remained at a stalemate, pushing the Bobcats into extra innings against the Valor. It wasn't until the bottom of the 10th that the Bobcats found the winning run. Achenbach first hit a single to center field and stole second. Kaitlynn Martinez set the Bobcats up for success with a double to right field, advancing Achenbach to third.
  • Toon was up to bat with Martinez on second and Achenbach on third. With a single up the middle, Achenbach reached home, scoring the winning run for the Bobcats.
  • Toon earned the victory for the game, pitching all 10 innings and notching 14 strikeouts, bringing her record to 21-3. 
  • Toon, Achenbach, and Martinez all led the Bobcats with two hits in the meeting, including a triple from Achenbach and double from Martinez.
Up next, the Bobcats will face off against Georgia Gwinnett College to continue their NAIA Opening Round run on Tuesday, May 13th at 2:30 p.m. in Lawrenceville, Ga.
