Women's Volleyball Wins Two At Florida College Invite

TEMPLE TERACE, Fla. – Highlighted by a .378 hitting percentage to begin play at the Florida College Invite on Friday afternoon, the ninth-ranked St. Thomas University Women's Volleyball team swept Park Gilbert (25-13, 25-17, 25-19) and overcame host FC in five sets (25-17, 20-25, 22-25, 25-18, 15-9) before concluding the weekend docket with a 3-1 setback against Loyola New Orleans (25-27, 25-21, 25-20, 25-13)

HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME 1):  

  • Trailing early in the opening set 11-9, the Bobcats flipped the advantage behind a 6-0 run while holding their opposition to two points for the rest of the frame. 

  • STU countered a 3-0 run by the Buccaneers that pushed them ahead 7-6 with an 8-0 spree to boast a 14-7 advantage. 

  • After splitting the initial 16 points of the third stanza, the Bobcats scored three-straight and led for the rest of the match. 

NOTEWORTHY (GAME 1): 

  • Raya Mlyakova sparked the offense behind 10 kills on a .526 hitting percentage, adding three service aces and one assisted block. 

  • Payton Bertke dished out 32 assists on top of four service aces. 

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE (GAME 1): 

  • The Bobcats ended the match with 44 kills on a .378 hitting percentage, Park-Gilbert tallied 25 on a .101 clip. 

  • STU served 11 aces while the Bucs logged six. 

  • St. Thomas recorded four solo blocks with four assisted versus three solo for Park-Gilbert. 

  • The Bobcats held a 42-29 advantage in digs 

HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME 2):  

  • STU scored the opening point of the match and never trailed in the first set. 

  • After splitting the opening 36 points of the second set, the host scored five-straight points to take a 23-18 advantage. 

  • The Bobcats held a late 22-21 lead in the third set before FC ended the stanza on a 4-0 run. 

  • St. Thomas answered a 2-0 start to the fourth frame by the Falcons with three-straight and kept the lead for the rest of the set to force a fifth stanza. 

  • The Bobcats never trailed in the decided set, pulling ahead behind a 4-0 run that created match point at 14-8. 

NOTEWORTHY (GAME 2): 

  • Mlyakova boasted 18 kills alongside six digs, two service aces, one solo block and one assisted. 

  • Bertke dished out 50 assists with 12 digs for a double-double. 

  • Tayla Barnes chipped in 12 kills, four solo blocks and three assisted. 

  • Ranya Mehta added 10 kills on a .556 clip and six assisted blocks. 

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE (GAME 2): 

  • The Bobcats ended the match with 56 kills on a .231 hitting percentage, FC tallied 48 on a .092 clip. 

  • STU served 10 aces while the Falcons logged eight. 

  • St. Thomas recorded seven solo blocks with 20 assisted versus four solo and 12 assisted for Florida College. 

  • The Bobcats held a 58-54 advantage in digs. 

HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME 2):  

  • After trading 4-0 runs to propelled Loyola to set point at 24-23, the Bobcats scored back-to-back points to take set point at 25-24 before closing the first frame at 27-25. 

  • Trailing late in the second stanza 20-16, STU knotted the score off a 4-0 rally only for the Wolfpack to end the frame on a 5-1 run. 

  • Loyola took the lead midway through the third set at 14-12, holding STU without a run of consecutive points until back-to-back tallies made it 23-19. 

  • The Wolfpack opened the fourth frame on a 5-0 run and never trailed in the set. 

NOTEWORTHY (GAME 3): 

  • Mlyakova recorded 10 kills and seven digs. 

  • Bertke dished out 33 assists with seven digs and two service aces. 

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE (GAME 3): 

  • The Bobcats ended the match with 41 kills on a .096 hitting percentage, Loyola tallied 44 on a .162 clip. 

  • STU served four aces while the Wolfpack logged 14. 

  • St. Thomas recorded six solo blocks with six assisted versus three solo and 10 assisted for Loyola. 

  • The Bobcats held a 66-52 advantage in digs.
