Softball Sweeps Florida Memorial In Sun Conference Series

Miami Gardens, Fla. - Behind a combined 29 hits over two games on Saturday, the 22nd-ranked St. Thomas University Softball Team swept host Florida Memorial 12-0, 14-0 to complete the Sun Conference series sweep.

HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME 1):
  • Christina Ortiz started the scoring in a five-run top of the first behind a triple that plated Emma Edwards before Kiara Selby and Alahnis Berrios added RBI hits.
  • Maggie Kirk sent Edwards home with a single in the top of the second before an Ortiz homer made it 8-0. 
  • Kirk scored Ana Mendieta in the top of the third off a triple.
  • Edwards used a single in the top of the fifth to score Mendieta before rounding the bases off an Ortiz RBI groundout.

NOTEWORTHY (GAME 1):
  • Ortiz went 2-4 with a home run, four RBI and two runs scored.
  • Edwards went 3-4 with one RBI and three runs scored.
  • Kirk went 2-3 with two RBI and one run scored.
  • Selby went 2-3 with two RBI and one run scored.
  • Melody Vizcaino threw a complete game with one hit allowed and nine strikeouts.
HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME 2):
  • Back-to-back hits from Ortiz and Jade Fayad in the top of the first scored Edwards and Ashley Ramon before FMU errors allowed two more runs to score and create a 4-0 lead. 
  • Ortiz and Fayad repeated their RBI at bats back-to-back in the top of second with Lilly Herndon, Mendiate and Edwards adding RBI hits to make it 9-0.
  • A two-run homer from Ortiz in the top of the third extended the Bobcats' lead to 11-0.
  • The Bobcats capitalized on a Lions' error in the top of the fourth to score a run.
  • A RBI single from Mendieta in the top of the fifth created the final score.

NOTEWORTHY (GAME 1):
  • Ortiz went 3-4 with a home run, four RBI and three runs scored.
  • Fayad went 3-4 with two RBI and one run scored.
  • Mendieta went 3-4 with two RBI.
  • Ramon scored three runs while going 1-2 at the plate.
  • Johana Magaldi struck out five batters in the complete game shutout.
