WILLIAMSBURG, KY — The St. Thomas University Bobcats women's soccer team fell to the Grace College Lancers, 2-1, on Saturday afternoon after a lengthy lightning delay.
Grace jumped out to an early lead, scoring twice in the opening 20 minutes. Joya Lienammer opened the scoring in the eighth minute, finding the back of the net at 8:26 off an assist from Abby Hodkin.
The Lancers doubled their advantage in the 19th minute when Cassidy Felger converted a penalty kick at 18:04, giving Grace a 2-0 lead heading into halftime.
St. Thomas responded early in the second half. Maria Mendes cut the deficit in half at 47:18, scoring to bring the Bobcats within one goal at 2-1.
Despite the second-half push, St. Thomas was unable to find the equalizer as Grace held on for the victory.
The Bobcats recorded three total shots, including two on goal, while Grace finished with 18 shots and nine shots on goal. St. Thomas goalkeeper made seven saves in the contest, keeping the Bobcats within striking distance throughout the match.
Grace also held a 10-1 advantage in corner kicks, while St. Thomas was whistled for 15 fouls compared to two for the Lancers.
Both teams received a yellow card during the contest. Grace's Cassidy Felger was cautioned in the 13th minute, while St. Thomas' Sierra Olivo received a yellow card at 51:03.
STU now looks to bounce back against Sun Conference rival Keiser at home.
Kickoff is set for Wednesday, September 16 in Miami Gardens at 7:00PM.
