MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. — The St. Thomas University Bobcats women's soccer team battled to a 2-2 draw against the Keiser University Seahawks on Tuesday night, as both teams exchanged goals in an evenly contested match.
St. Thomas struck first in the ninth minute when Leenah Bigby found the back of the net at 8:29 to give the Bobcats an early 1-0 advantage. Natalie Woodward provided the assist on Bigby's second goal of the season.
Keiser responded in the 38th minute, with Blanca Bachi scoring at 37:23 off an assist from Avril Amil Ruiz to level the match at 1-1.
The Bobcats regained the lead just before halftime. At 44:04, Maria Mendes converted for St. Thomas, scoring her third goal of the season. Julia Ezcurra was credited with the assist, sending the Bobcats into halftime with a 2-1 advantage.
Keiser answered quickly after the break. Ruby Vernon scored at 47:57 to tie the match at 2-2, where the score would remain through the final whistle.
The Seahawks finished with a 23-10 advantage in shots, including a 13-5 edge in shots on goal. Despite the difference in offensive opportunities, the Bobcats' defense and goalkeeper play kept St. Thomas in the match. The Bobcats recorded 11 saves compared to three for Keiser.
Keiser also held an 8-0 advantage in corner kicks, while St. Thomas was whistled for 10 fouls compared to six for the Seahawks.
The Bobcats and Seahawks traded chances throughout the second half, but neither side was able to find a decisive goal, resulting in the 2-2 draw.
St. Thomas will look to build on the draw as they travel to Ave Maria University on Tuesday, September 22.
Kickoff is set for 6PM.
