MARIETTA, Ga. – The St. Thomas University Women's Soccer team came up short against the Life University Running Eagles, falling 1-0 on Thursday evening.
The Bobcats controlled much of the attacking play in the opening half, outshooting the Running Eagles 6-1 through the first 45 minutes. STU put four of those six attempts on target, but Life's goalkeeper kept the Bobcats off the scoreboard with four first-half saves.
St. Thomas also earned three corner kicks in the opening period compared to just one for Life, but neither side was able to break through before halftime as the teams entered the break scoreless.
Life increased its offensive pressure after the break and eventually found the game's only goal in the 59th minute. At the 58:49 mark, Louise Martineau found the back of the net off an assist from Djenna Zahoual to give the Running Eagles a 1-0 advantage.
The Bobcats continued searching for the equalizer, recording five shots in the second half, including two on goal. Life's defense held firm, however, as the Running Eagles preserved the one-goal advantage through the final whistle.
St. Thomas finished the match with an 11-10 advantage in total shots and placed six attempts on goal compared to four for Life. The Running Eagles held a narrow 5-4 advantage in corner kicks.
Bobcats goalkeeper Emma Butcher recorded three saves on four shots on goal, while Life finished with six saves to secure the clean sheet. STU committed seven fouls compared to three by the Running Eagles, with neither team receiving a caution or ejection during the match.
St. Thomas will now look to bounce back against Georgia Gwinett College in Lawrenceville, Georgia, on Saturday, September 5th.
Kickoff is set for 12PM.
