MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – The St. Thomas University (STU) Women's Soccer team fell to the Georgia Gwinnett College Grizzlies, 2-1, in a tightly contested matchup.
Georgia Gwinnett opened the scoring in the 14th minute when Alliyah Rosales found the back of the net off assists from Nova Eskelinen and Kendra Delgado, giving the Grizzlies an early 1-0 advantage.
The Bobcats responded eight minutes later. STU earned a penalty kick in the 22nd minute, and Rebecca Louis stepped up to the spot and converted to even the match at 1-1. The goal marked Louis' second of the season.
The two sides entered halftime deadlocked at one despite Georgia Gwinnett holding a 7-3 advantage in shots during the opening 45 minutes.
The Grizzlies regained the lead in the 57th minute. Hannah Lorenz scored her sixth goal of the season off assists from Jessica Fuentes and Andrea Cova to put Georgia Gwinnett ahead, 2-1.
St. Thomas looked for another equalizer over the remainder of the second half but was unable to break through the Georgia Gwinnett defense. The Bobcats recorded three shots in the second half, with all three finding the target, but the Grizzlies made three saves to preserve the lead.
Georgia Gwinnett finished the match with a 13-6 advantage in total shots and an 8-5 edge in shots on goal. The Grizzlies also held an 8-1 advantage in corner kicks. STU's goalkeeper finished the contest with six saves, while Georgia Gwinnett recorded four.
Both teams committed seven fouls in the match. Hanah Gonzalez received a caution for the Bobcats late in the first half, while Georgia Gwinnett's Rosales was cautioned in the 68th minute.
Bobcats will not loom to regroup as they travel to Kentucky to take on University of the Cumberlands on Thursday, September 10.
Kickoff is set for 7pm.
