MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. — The St. Thomas University football team delivered an offensive explosion on Saturday, scoring 50 unanswered points at one point on its way to a dominant 58-14 victory over the University of Fort Lauderdale.
The Bobcats overcame an early score from the opposition and quickly took control, using a balanced rushing attack, explosive plays through the air and a strong defensive performance to pull away.
Fort Lauderdale opened the scoring with a touchdown pass to take an early 7-0 lead, but St. Thomas answered immediately.
With 10:38 remaining in the first quarter, Isaiah Lopez powered his way into the end zone from eight yards out to put the Bobcats on the board. Although the extra-point attempt was unsuccessful, St. Thomas had established its offensive rhythm.
Just over two minutes later, the Bobcats struck again.
Jalen Daniels connected with Michael Duran on a 52-yard touchdown pass, giving St. Thomas its first lead of the afternoon. The successful extra point pushed the advantage to 13-7.
The Bobcats continued their offensive surge late in the opening quarter. Jaden Alveranga punched in a one-yard touchdown with 17 seconds remaining, extending the lead to 19-7.
St. Thomas carried that momentum into the second quarter.
After putting together a methodical 96-yard drive, Alveranga found the end zone again, this time from two yards out. The touchdown capped an eight-play, 96-yard possession and stretched the Bobcats' lead to 27-7.
Fort Lauderdale responded with a defensive touchdown, returning an interception 88 yards for a score to cut the deficit to 27-13.
The Bobcats quickly erased any momentum, however.
Lopez capped a six-play, 57-yard drive with his second rushing touchdown of the afternoon, scoring from nine yards out to send St. Thomas into halftime with a 33-14 advantage.
The third quarter belonged entirely to the Bobcats.
Lopez completed his standout afternoon with his third rushing touchdown, breaking free for a 24-yard score early in the quarter. St. Thomas then added points on a 29-yard field goal from JAY GIUNTA, pushing the lead to 44-14.
The Bobcats weren't finished.
Just minutes later, Elijah Crockett burst into the end zone from six yards out following a short two-play, four-yard drive. With Giunta's extra point, St. Thomas took a commanding 51-14 lead heading into the final quarter.
Crockett added another touchdown in the fourth, finishing a nine-play, 60-yard drive with a four-yard touchdown run. The score capped the Bobcats' scoring and completed a dominant 58-14 victory.
St. Thomas showcased its offensive depth throughout the afternoon, finding the end zone on the ground six times while also connecting on a 52-yard touchdown pass.
The Bobcats' defense also made its presence felt, limiting the opposition's offensive opportunities after the opening quarter and helping St. Thomas maintain control throughout the second half.
With the victory, St. Thomas continues its strong start under head coach Drew Davis, showcasing an offense capable of producing explosive plays while controlling the game on the ground.
The Bobcats will look to carry the momentum from Saturday's convincing victory into their next contest as the season continues.
