CORAL GABLES, FL – The St. Thomas University Bobcats drop a road game to the University of Miami Hurricanes by a score of 8-0. The Bobcats struggled to find offense against the top notched Hurricanes, who are ranked #4 in NCAA D1. The loss drops the Bobcats overall record to 9-18 on the season and 4-5 in The Sun Conference.
The Bobcats had some scoring chances early in the game, but could not capitalize. In each of the first 3 innings, the Bobcats had guys on base. In the 3rd inning,
DePhillip Mason got on base with a hit and quickly advanced to second base with a steal.
Nestor Rincon stepped up to drive in Mason with two outs and came up with a blast to right field, but came up just short as it was caught on the warning track.
St. Thomas was held to only 4 hits on the evening by some stellar Hurricane pitching. After the 3rd inning, the Bobcats were unable to reach base as they were put out 1, 2, 3 in order for the final 6 innings.
Four different hitters for the Bobcats each recorded one hit.
Alexander Diez and
Ruy Rodriguez each went 1-3.
DePhillip Mason and
Alvaro Bastos each went 1-4.
The Bobcats, however, did get some solid pitching. Starter,
Daylan Gil, went a solid 4 innings giving up only 5 hits and 3 runs. Two of those runs came in the first inning off of a home run. Gil pitched very well after the homer and settled in nicely for the Bobcats as he also tallied 3 strikeouts, but was credited with the loss.
Jose Mendoza came in, in relief for Gil, and pitched a solid 3 innings of his own. Mendoza pitched 3 innings and allowed only 4 hits and 3 runs, but only 2 were earned as a couple errors piled up. Mendoza also made an amazing play in the field, as a ground ball went up the first-base line, he was able to run alongside the batter and pick up the groundball with his glove and flipped it to
Nestor Rincon with his glove to just beat out the batter for the out. The Bobcats allowed a couple more runs in the 8th inning off of another home run.
The Bobcats take right back to the field on Wednesday (March 18) against Pace University. It is a home game and will be held at Frank R. Esposito Stadium at 6:00 pm.
