WEST PALM BEACH, FL – The St. Thomas University Bobcats clinched post-season play with a conference sweep over the Northwood University Seahawks. Heading into the weekend series the Bobcats needed just 1 win to clinch a birth into The Sun Conference Tournament as the top 6 teams qualify. The first game on Friday night turned out to be the clincher as the Bobcats won by a score of 14-2. The Bobcats then just put the icing on the cake as they went on to win the other two games of the series by the scores of 4-1 and 12-11. The wins boast the Bobcats record to 23-30 overall and 13-11 in The Sun Conference.
Game one of the series had plenty of offense for the Bobcats as they totaled for 14 runs on 17 hits. Five different Bobcats had multiple hit games.
DePhillip Mason went 2-4 with 2 runs and 2 walks.
Alvaro Bastos went 3-5 with 2 RBIs, 2 runs, and a walk.
Kyle Radziewski went 3-4 with a RBI, 2 runs, and 2 walks.
Ruy Rodriguez went 2-3 with 2 RBIs. Also
Nestor Rincon and
Oswaldo Troconis combined for 5 RBIs on 2 hits.
The Bobcats also got splendid pitching in game one as
Daylan Gil shut down the Seahawks bats allowing them to only get 2 runs on 7 hits. Gil went a strong 8 innings notching the win for the Bobcats before giving way to
Manuel Rodriguez in the 9th. Rodriguez then pitched a perfect 9th inning.
Game two had much less scoring as the Bobcats declined their run production from game one by 8 runs. That still ended up being plenty as Bobcats pitching again shut down the Seahawks allowing only 1 run. The Bobcats tallied for 8 hits and plated 4.
Alvaro Bastos went 2-4 with a walk.
DePhillip Mason went 3-4 with a double, a walk and 2 stolen bases.
The Bobcats ran out 5 different pitchers in game two as they combined to allow 11 hits.
Kelvin Colon got the win for the Bobcats as he went 3.1 innings allowing 1 run on 6 hits.
Miguel Hernandez went 2.2 innings allowing only 1 hit.
Robert Reina pitched an inning allowing 3 hits.
Wesely Morejon pitched 0.2 innings allowing only a walk.
Danny Sanchez got the save for the Bobcats as he went 1.1 innings allowing only one hit.
The Bobcats swept the series as they finished off the Seahawks in game 3 by a score of 12-11. The Bobcats got off to an incredible start as they scored 10 runs in the first inning. They were going to need every one of those runs as they held on for narrow victory. The game was called in the 6th inning due to darkness. The Bobcats only had 8 hits in the game and two players with multiple hits.
Marlon Pascual went 2-3 with a RBI, 3 runs, and a walk. Aristides Sosa went 2-4 with a RBI, a run, and a stolen base.
Lance Larimer had 3 RBIs, 2 runs, and a walk to go along with his double.
Oswaldo Troconis also went 1-2 with a RBI, run, and 2 walks.
Andres Ibarz got the win for the Bobcats going only 2.1 innings and allowing 8 runs (7 earned) on 8 hits.
Norberto Talavera pitched an inning allowing only 1 hit.
Yamil Echeverria went 0.2 innings allowing 3 runs on 1 hit.
Manuel Rodriguez then pitched one inning allowing only a walk.
The Bobcats will now have one game versus Barry before they will partake in The Sun Conference Tournament. The game against Barry will be Wednesday at home with a 6:00 pm start. As for The Sun Conference Tournament, the Bobcats will be taking on Warner University on Sunday (May 3) at 11:00 am. The Bobcats are the 5th seed in the tournament and will be playing the 2nd seeded Warner. The tournament will be held at the City of Palms Park in Ft. Myers, FL from May 3-6. The tournament is double-elimination and the winner will receive an automatic berth into NAIA National Championship.
