Bobcats drop conference series 2-1 to Webber

BABSON PARK, FL – The St. Thomas University Bobcats drop conference series 2-1 to the Webber International University Warriors. The Bobcats came out to a hot start on Friday night (April 3) as they combined for 8 runs on 22 hits and pitcher Daylan Gil pitched a gem in the Bobcats 8-0 win. The Bobcats then dropped the next two games of the series, including a 12-inning thriller. On Saturday (April 4), the Bobcats lost game 1 by a score of 8-7 (in 12 innings) and lost game 2 by a score of 5-3. The Bobcats overall record is now at 17-23 and 8-7 in The Sun Conference.

Daylan Gil pitched a complete game shutout to start the series off on Friday night. Gil pitched 9 innings giving up only 4 hits and 2 walks; he also struck out 7 batters. With Gil shutting down the Warriors' bats, the Bobcats didn't need too much offense but the offense combined for 22 hits. 7 different Bobcats had multi-hit games and 4 of those had at least 3 hits. DePhillip Mason went 4-6 with a run scored and a RBI. Alvaro Bastos went 4-5 with a run scored and 2 stolen bases. Kyle Radziewski went 3-5 with a RBI. Ruy Rodriguez went 3-5 with 2 RBIs and a run scored. Nestor Rincon and Anthony Angulo each had 2 RBIs.

Game two of the series on Saturday (April 4) was a tough loss for the Bobcats as they fell in 12 innings by a score of 8-7. The Bobcats were on a season high 6-game win streak before the loss. The Bobcats maintained their offense in the game combining for 20 hits. They almost were able to double the Warriors' hit total, but were just unable to get enough across the plate. Four different Bobcats had 3 hits. DePhillip Mason went 3-6 with a run scored. Lance Larimer went 3-6 with a double. Oswaldo Troconis went 3-6 with a solo homer and 2 RBIs. Ruy Rodriguez went 3-4 with a solo homer, a double, and 2 RBIs.

Andres Ibarz got the start for the Bobcats going 6 innings giving up 4 runs (2 earned) on only 5 hits. Ibarz was able to strikeout 3 and walk 4. Manuel Rodriguez pitched a solid 3 innings allowing 1 run on 3 hits and also struck out 5 batters. Jesse Fernandez was credited with the loss. Fernandez only allowed 1 run on 2 hits after pitching 2.1 innings.

The Bobcats finally ran out of some offense in the series finale. After totaling 42 hits in the 2 games prior, the Bobcats only managed 7 hits. Lance Larimer was the only Bobcats who had multiple hits as he went 2-3 with 2 RBIs and a run scored. Larimer was involved in all of the Bobcats 3 runs as he batted in 2 and crossed the plate as the 3rd run.

Miguel Hernandez was credited with the loss for the Bobcats. Hernandez pitched a solid 5.1 innings allowing 5 runs on 8 hits. Kelvin Colon also came in and pitched the rest of the 6th inning allowing only 1 hit.

The Bobcats are back on the field Tuesday (April 7) at 6:00 pm against NOVA Southeastern University. The game will be played at NOVA, in Davie, FL.
