RIVERSIDE, Ca—The STU baseball team suffered a tough defeat today in the first game that took place in the Riverside Bracket of the National Championships Opening Round. They were unable to muster much offense and fell to the CSU San Marcos Cougars 3-1.
With the exception of Hector Bello and Elio Rey the Bobcats offense was unable to get anything going following the cross country trip. Bello and Rey each had 2 hit games accounting for all 4 of the Bobcats hits.
While CSUSM struck first plating 2 runs in the top half of the 4th, STU got one back in the in the bottom of the 5th from a mixture of small ball and a wild streak from CSUSM pitcher Adam Bileckyj. Following a Ricky Claudio groundout, Elio Rey came to the plate knocking his first hit of the game back up the middle out to center field. A wild pitch from Bileckyj put Rey on second and a Michael De Jesus groundout to second provided enough to move him to third. He would then score on a Bileckyj's second wild pitch of the inning cutting the deficit to 2-1 in favor of the Cougars.
A solid effort for Jorge Perez' pitching staff was negated by the lack of offensive production. Manny Perdomo started on the bump for the Bobcats surrendering just 2 runs and 7 hits through 4 and 2/3 innings of work before making way to Corey Estrada who finished up the 5th. After retiring the first batter in the 6th Perez made a move to the pen again bringing in the senior Jeff Lara. Lara would go on to pitch a gem throwing the final 3 and 2/3 innings yielding just one hit striking out 2 while facing the minimum number of batters.
CSUSM capped the scoring in the adding a third and final run in the top of the sixth giving them a 3-1 lead and subsequent victory.
STU returns to the diamond tomorrow morning as they face British Columbia at 9am PST / 12 noon EST in an elimination game. With the pressure of an elimination game Coach Perez will turn to the steady arm of the sophomore out Miami, Danny Sanchez.
