Box Score MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – The STU baseball team suffered its first loss of the 2013 season as NCAA DII Rollins defeated the Bobcats, 8-1 in Winter Park, Fla. St. Thomas, ranked 13
th in the preseason NAIA Top 25 Coaches Poll, fell to 4-1. Rollins improved to 1-0.
The game was scoreless for the first 2 ½ innings until a triple by Mayfield, followed by a two-out single gave the Tars a 1-0 lead. In his next at bat, Hunter Mayfield drove in a run to give Rollins a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth. Rollins kept on scoring building a 5-0 lead through six innings, then put the game away with a three-run eighth inning to make the score 8-1.
In the top of the ninth, STU catcher
Giovanni Zayas led off with a walk, then advanced to third on a double by
Oscar Romero. A fielder's choice RBI by
Edwin Rolon scored Zayas for STU's lone run, but it was too little, too late for the Bobcats.
St. Thomas registered six hits, all singles with the exception of Romero's ninth-inning double. Rolon (2-4) and
Nicholas Perez (2-3) were the only Bobcats with multiple hits.
Emilio Ogando (0-1) started the game for St. Thomas and allowed one earned run on three hits, while striking out five and walking three.

Steven Colon,
Dayron Gomez, and
Kevin Quintana all saw action in relief.
The Bobcats return to action with its opening Sun Conference series this Friday and Saturday vs. Northwood at Paul Demie Mainieri Field, Frank R. Esposito Stadium.
