MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. - The St. Thomas baseball team opened its 2014 regular season with a three-game sweep over Concordia (Mich.) at Paul Demie Maineiri Field. The Bobcats outscored Concordia 25-4 in the series which included two shutouts by STU pitching. On Friday, STU blanked Concordia 8-0, followed by wins in both games of Saturday's doubleheader by the score of 8-0 and 9-4.
Friday's game followed a pre-game ceremony where former STU Coach Manny Mantrana had his jersey retired, creating an electric atmosphere for opening night. The Bobcats responded with two big innings and a combined three-hitter by pitchers
Eddie Cody and
Dayron Gomez.
STU opened the scoring with a four-run third inning highlighted by an RBI triple by
Edwin Medina. The Bobcats weren't done as they piled on four more runs in the fourth inning sparked by a two-run home run by
Elim Perritte.
Cody earned the win allowing two hits in five innings and striking out 10 of the 18 batters he faced. Gomez came in to pitch the final four innings and kept the shutout going despite walking six batters, allowing just one hit.
On Saturday,
Emilio Ogando took the mound and gave up three hits and struck out eight to earn the victory.
Alex Perez pitched three hitless innings and
Andres Hernandez pitched a scoreless ninth to preserve the second shutout in as many games for the Bobcats.
Offensively in game two of the series, Medina went 4-4 with four RBI and
Adam Duarte went 2-4 with two doubles and two RBI to lead the Bobcats.
In the final game of the series, Concordia opened the scoring with two runs in the top of the first. However, the Bobcats would score four runs in the bottom of the frame and never trail from there. Perritte hit his second home run of the season, while
Eric Santamaria was 2-3 with three RBI and a run scored to fuel the Bobcats.
Kyle Young started the game and earned the victory, allowing three runs on eight hits across six innings.
STU returns to action on Wednesday at 6 p.m. vs. Florida Memorial at Paul Demie Mainieri Field.
