Box Score MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. - St. Thomas rallied back with a dramatic eight-run comeback to defeat Nova Southeastern 8-7 in 11 innings on Tuesaday night at Paul Demie Mainieri Field.
Oscar Aguirre struck a deep sacfrifice fly to center field to score
Bryan Bermudez in the bottom of the 11th to give the Bobcats the walk-off win.
Bermudez and
Eric Santamaria both went 3-for-6, while
Dayron Gomez hit a two-run home run and a doublel to lead the Bobcats offensively. Santamaria also pitched the final 2.1 innings in relieft to earn the win.
Nova Southeastern scored one run in the top of the first before adding six runs in the third inning to pad a 7-0 lead. The Sharks were held scoreless from that point forward as the STU bullpen would go on to pitch 8.1 shutout innings.
Fernando Escarra, who came in to relieve starter
Andres Hernandez in the third, shut down NSU in the fourth and fifth and retired the last four batters he faced.
Devon Stubbings got the first out in the sixth inning, then was relieved by
Rene Lozano who ended the inning with a pop up and a strikeout. With runners on second and third and no outs in the seventh, freshman
Alex Perez came in and was sensational retiring seven straight Sharks. Perez struck out three consecutive batters at one point, pitching all the way into the top of the ninth.
That's when NSU had its best opportunity to break the 7-7 tie as the Sharks loaded the bases with two outs in the top of the ninth. Santamaria was called in from left field to pitch in the tenous situation and he responded in huge fashion forcing a pop up to end the inning.
The St. Thomas come back began in the fifth inning as
Elim Perritte hit a two-RBI single to score Aguirre and Santamaria. Next up was Gomez who hit his second home run of the season, a towering bomb to right field that scored Perritte and cut the deficit to three runs. Santamaria scored again in the bottom of the sixth on a RBI ground out by
Paul Chacin to make the score 7-5. An error by NSU's second baseman then scored
Michael Centeno and
Brandon Canizares to tie the score 7-7 in the bottom of the seventh.
The Bobcats left two men on base in the ninth and another in the tenth. Santamaria retired the Sharks 1-2-3 in the top of the 11th, setting up the bottom of the 11th as Bermudez led off with an infield single.
Adam Duarte moved Bermudez to second on a sacrifice bunt, who then reached third on an at bat by Santamaria that resulted in another NSU error. Aguirre then hit the game-winning RBI to drive home Bermudez and send the Bobcats and their fans into a frenzy.
The win improved the Bobcats to 20-10 on the season and gave STU a 3-1 record against teams in the highly regarded NCAA DII Sunshine State Conference. The Sharks fell to 19-6.
St. Thomas returns to action this weekend with a Sun Conference series vs. Ave Maria at Paul Demie Mainieri Field. First pitch on Friday is at 6 p.m. followed by a doubelheader on Saturday beginning at 12 p.m.
