Box Score CORAL GABLES, Fla. – St. Thomas (7-8) traveled south to the Mark Light Field at Alex Rodriguez Park for a clash with the four-time NCAA National Champion University of Miami (4-0).

In the 80th meeting between the two schools (dating back to when STU was known as Biscayne College), the Bobcats and Hurricanes played a classic with St. Thomas falling 7-6 in ten innings.

Trailing 4-3, a three-run home run to left field by Oscar Aguirre put the Bobcats ahead 6-4 in the top of the eighth.  Adam Duarte singled to lead off the top of the eighth, then with one out Jose Gomez reached base on a hit-by-pitch.  On a 0-2 count, Aguirre hit a towering shot to score both Duarte and Gomez to give STU the lead.

Chris Rodriguez held the lead, allowing just one run in eighth.  With the score 6-5, a hard rain fell and the tarp was rolled out on Mark Light Field for a 43-minute rain delay.  Rodriguez returned to pitch the bottom of the ninth after the delay.  Miami scored the tying run in the ninth, then won with a run in the bottom of the tenth.

The Hurricanes opened the scoring with two runs in the bottom of the first.  After a scoreless second inning, German Morales led off the third with a towering solo home run to right field.  Adam Duarte then followed with a double down the right field line.  With one out and Duarte on third, Gomez hit a single up the middle to score Duarte and tie the score 2-2.

Miami added runs in the third and fourth to take a 4-2 lead.  In the top of the sixth, Steve Fischer hit an RBI-single that scored Gomez.

Alex Sarmiento started for the Bobcats and went 3.2 innings, allowing four runs (three earned) on six hits, striking out four and walking three.  Sarmiento was relieved by Devon Stubbings who retired the only batter he faced in the fourth.  Alex Hernandez then pitched a scoreless fifth inning, allowing just one hit.  Erne Valdes pitched the sixth and ended a UM threat with a bases-loaded strikeout.  Alex Viera entered the game to pitch a shutout seventh.

The Bobcats return to action on Friday with the season-opening Sun Conference series at Webber International.
