Ben Ancheff struck out nine batters and
Jose Gomez went 5-for-5 with three RBI as no. 2 St. Thomas (8-7, 1-0 TSC) defeated host Webber International (8-5, 2-2 TSC) 9-4 in the Bobcats' first Sun Conference game of the season.
Ancheff (3-2), STU's ace starting pitcher, earned the win after fanning nine Warrior hitters over seven complete innings, allowing just two runs on eight hits.
The Bobcats had a big night offensively led by Gomez who went 5-for-5 with three RBI and three runs scored.
Oscar Aguirre was 3-for-5 with 2 RBI and
Steven Fischer 2-for-5 with 2 RBI.
The Bobcats jumped to an early lead in the top of the first as Jose Gomez hit a 2-out single and stole second. Â Oscar Aguirre then hit an RBI-single that scored Gomez.Webber went ahead 2-1 and held the lead until the top of the sixth when

In the top of the seventh, STU Gutierrez reached base on an error and recorded an RBI on the play scoring
Adam Duarte for the go-ahead run. Â The big inning for the Bobcats continued as Gomez and Aguirre followed with RBI-singles to put STU ahead 5-2.
St. Thomas added four insurance runs in the top of the ninth to put the game out of reach.
The two teams continue the three-game series with a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 12 p.m. in Babson Park, Fla.
