BOBCATS SWEEP DOUBLE HEADER VS PURDUE NORTH-CENTRAL

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – St. Thomas (15-10) swept a doubleheader vs. Purdue-North Central (0-10) on Monday night at Paul Demie Mainieri Field.  The Bobcats came from behind to defeat PNC 9-6 in game one.  In game two, St. Thomas shutout the Panthers 10-0 in seven innings.
 
In game one, the Bobcats trailed 5-1 heading into the bottom of the sixth.  Oscar Aguirre then hit a towering three-run home run that cleared Boras Batting Cages beyond the left field fence.  In the bottom of the eighth, Jose Gomez scored the game-winning run on a wild pitch to put the Bobcats ahead 6-5.  Bryan Bermudez then hit a 2-RBI single followed by an RBI-single by Adam Duarte to complete a run of eighth unanswered runs for STU.
 
Alex Viera (4-0) earned the win in game one after pitching 2.1 innings, allowing just two hits, while striking out four and walking one.  Chris Rodriguez closed the game in the ninth.  Alejandro Kan was STU's starting pitcher and allowed three runs, two earned on eight hits, while striking out three and walking two in five innings pitched.
 
In the second game, Duarte stole two bases in the bottom of the first, then scored the opening run on a ground out RBI by Aguirre.  In the second inning, back-to-back sacrifice flies by Bermudez and German Morales scored Cesar Ramirez and German Morales to put the Bobcats ahead 3-0.  Ramirez hit a two-run triple scoring Kendrick Gutierrez and Branden Gonzalez to make the score 5-0.  
 
The Bobcats would add five more runs in the final innings including a RBI double by Brandon Pomeranz that scored Bermudez in the sixth.
 
Emilio Valdez (1-0) got the start in game two and pitched five shutout innings allowing just three hits with eight strikeouts and no walks.  Brandon Valentine pitched a perfect sixth inning with Eric Torrente pitching the seventh to complete the combined shutout.
 
St. Thomas returns to action on Wednesday vs. Wilmington at Paul Demie Mainieri Field.
