Box Score FORT MYERS, Fla.- Keiser (37-20, 14-10 TSC) defeated St. Thomas (35-20, 16-8 TSC) 13-5 Monday in The Sun Conference Championship Game at City of Palms Park. STU's
Jose Gomez and
Cesar Ramirez were both named to the All-Tournament team.
St. Thomas University scored first with a run on an RBI-single by
Oscar Rodriguez to score
Jose Gomez. The lead was short lived however as the Seahawks responded with three runs in the bottom of the first and two runs in the bottom of the second. Down 5-1, the Bobcats answered with a two-run blast from
Jose Gomez scoring
Bryan Bermudez in the third to cut the deficit to two runs. A
Steven Fischer RBI single then scored
German Morales in the fourth to make it a 5-4 ball game.
Keiser exploded with eight unanswered runs in four innings to take a commanding lead over St. Thomas. The Bobcats did get a run in the eighth on a Morales RBI-single scoring
Kendrick Gutierrez but it was too big a deficit for St. Thomas to overcome.
Despite poor pitching totals for the Bobcat hurlers who allowed eight earned runs on 10 hits and walked nine batters, STU's
Brandon Valentin and
Devon Stubbings both pitched well in relief for the Bobcats. Valentin did not allow a hit in three innings, walking three batters and striking out one. Stubbings pitched 1.1 hitless innings with one strikeout and no walks. Defensive miscues hurt the cause as well as the Bobcats committed four errors.
St. Thomas now awaits the announcement of the pairings for the NAIA World Series Opening Rounds on May 13. The NAIA World Series Opening Rounds will be played May 17-20 with the NAIA World Series scheduled for May 27 – June 3 in Lewiston, Idaho.
