Box Score 2 MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. - St. Thomas (9-5, 5-3 TSC) split a doubleheader vs. conference foe Thomas University (8-10, 1-7 TSC) Friday at Paul Demie Mainieri Field.
Michael Centeno hit two home runs and
Erne Valdes (4-0) struck out ten batters to lead the Bobcats to the win in game one.
Centeno's first home run was a solo shot in the third inning that sailed beyond the left field wall and over the Boras Training Institute Batting Cages. His second homer came in the fifth inning to score
James Spatafora who had reached base with an RBI double earlier in the frame.
Daniel Lowry and
Kendrick Gutierrez added RBI singles in the victorious offensive output.
Valdes earned the win after a going 5.1 shutout innings, allowing just five runs while striking out ten and walking one. It marked the second double-digit strikeout total of the year for Valdes who has now struck out 35 batters in 21.1 innings pitched.
Andrew Denis earned his first save of the season in relief of Valdes. Denis went 3.2 innings allowing one unearned run on two hits. Denis who holds a 0.00 ERA has not allowed an earned run this season in 14 innings pitched.
In game two, STU struck first on an RBI single by
Jack Diaz that scored
Orlando Rivera. The Night Hawks responded with three runs in the third inning. The Bobcats would tie the game at 3-3 in the seventh on another Diaz RBI single and a Centeno sacrifice fly. However, the Night Hawks would score two runs in the eighth inning and shutout the Bobcats for the final two frames for the upset.
The series concludes Saturday at 1 p.m at Paul Demie Mainieri Field.
