Box Score AVE MARIA, Fla. – Senior designated hitter
David Palenzuela homered twice to lead no. 12 St. Thomas (11-5, 6-3 TSC) to a 13-4 win over host Ave Maria (7-11, 1-8 TSC) on Monday afternoon.
The Bobcats recorded 15 hits and committed zero errors in the road win.Â
Alex Perez earned the win after allowing two runs on six hits and striking out six over five innings.Â
Tyler Morales pitched the final four innings of the game to earn the save, allowing two runs on just three hits while striking out four and walking one.
With the score tied 1-1 after one inning, STU blew the game open with an eight-run explosion in the second.Â
Randy Oliva singled, then scored as
James Spatafora hit a two-run home run, his third of the year. Â
Michael Sanchez scored on a passed ball which was followed by
Jack Diaz who hit a two-RBI single. Then came the first of Palenzuela's two home runs on the day, a three-run shot scoring Diaz and
Michael Centeno.
Palenzuela would homer again in the top of the fifth to mark the second time in the last four days that a Bobcat has hit two home runs in a game. (Centeno hit two homers vs. Thomas Univ. this past Friday night).
Five players registered multi-hit games.Â
Orlando Rivera went 3-for-4 with a double, an RBI and three runs scored.Â
Kendrick Gutierrez was 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored. Diaz finished 2-for-4 with four RBI and a run scored. Palenzuela was 2-for-4 with the two home runs, four RBI. Oliva also recorded two hits and scored a run.
The Bobcats return to action on the road at NCAA DII Eckerd College in St. Petersburg, Fla. for a two-game series that begins Tuesday evening at 6 p.m.
