Box Score MONTGOMERY, Ala.- No. 12 St. Thomas (2-0) charged out of the gates in the first game of the NAIA Southeastern Challenge on Friday against No. 6 Lindsey Wilson (0-1) at Harrison Field, winning 13-1. The Bobcats tallied 21 hits while holding the Blue Raiders to two.
German Morales went 4-4 with 3 RBI and was accompanied by
Randy Oliva, who had two doubles for 4 RBI. Eight different Bobcat hitters collected multiple hits in the win, as well as four Bobcat batters scoring multiple runs each. St. Thomas got the scoring going in the second, third, and fourth innings, but were able to break things open in the top of the eighth inning, putting a five-spot on the scoreboard.
Following an opening night one-hit shutout, four Bobcat pitchers combined to hold No. 6 Lindsey Wilson to two hits.
Erne Valdes, who started the game going four innings, gave up one unearned run, on one hit and struck out six.
Rene Arauz replaced Valdes, picking up the win in three innings of work.
Brandon Valentin and
Tyler Morales both pitched hitless innings.
So far this season, St. Thomas' pitching staff has surrendered just three hits in two games. They have faced 61 batters with 51 total at bats, which results in an .059 batting average against. Of their 17 innings pitched this season, opponents have scored a run in just one of those innings, which came when Lindsey Wilson scored in the bottom third inning today-snapping a 10-inning scoreless streak.
In day two of the NAIA Southeastern Challenge, STU will face No. 4 Tennessee Wesleyan at 12 p.m. EST on Saturday, February 4, followed by No. 2 Faulkner University at 2:30 p.m. EST.
