St. Thomas finished the week 7-2, improving to 19-8 on the season. Let's give you the rundown of last week and preview the upcoming schedule.
STU BASEBALL INVITATIONAL
The Bobcats completed their Invitational tournament that lasted Saturday-to-Saturday. In total, STU played nine games against NAIA and NCAA DII teams, going 7-2 in that span. These were great games to showcase their talent, and play host to other schools in the northeast, as they opened Paul Demie Mainieri Field to these schools for games not included on the Bobcats schedule. In the duration of the week, St. Thomas defeated Stonehill College, Felician College, College of St. Joseph, Nyack College, and Adelphi University.
Erne Valdes and
Kenny Roder each picked up two wins during the week. Valdes is now 6-0 on the season, and Roder is 4-1 with three consecutive complete game victories. Bobcat hitters lit up the scoreboard over the course of the week, putting 10 or more runs on the board in six of their nine games.
Michael Centeno,
Jack Diaz,
David Palenzuela, and
Randy Oliva hit home runs during the games, as Centeno still leads the team with nine homers.
HEAD COACH JORGE PEREZ THREE WINS AWAY FROM 300
Entering the season, Head Coach
Jorge Perez was sitting at 278 wins at St. Thomas. With 19 wins under their belt, the Bobcats have Perez just three wins away from the 300 mark in his ninth season as coach of the Bobcats.
ON DECK FOR THE BOBCATS
STU will be home on Tuesday and Wednesday to face off against two Sun Conference rivals in Keiser and Ave Maria. Since these games will be during the week, they will not count towards the Bobcats Sun Conference record. St. Thomas will be looking to avenge a weekend series loss to Keiser from earlier in the year.
Oscar Rodriguez, who was injured earlier in the season, returned to his usual two spot in the lineup. Rodriguez was not in the series against Keiser, in which the Bobcats lost two games by a combined two runs. On Friday, the Bobcats will head up to South Carolina to play a Sun Conference series against University of South Carolina Beaufort.
