Oscar Rodriguez hit a walk-off single with the bases loaded to score
Kendrick Gutierrez in the bottom of the tenth inning as host St. Thomas (20-8, Ranked #3 by Perfect Game) defeated Keiser (20-8, Ranked #1 by Perfect Game) Tuesday night in a thriller at Paul Demie Mainieri Field.
In the bottom of the tenth, the Bobcats loaded bases with one out as Gutierrez reached on an error followed by
James Spatafora walk.
Orlando Rivera singled to load bases for Rodriguez who hit a single to right field bringing home Gutierrez to ignite celebration by the Bobcats.
Gutierrez went 3-for-5 with a double, two RBI and the game-winning run scored. Rivera was 3-for-5 with a sacrifice bunt, while
Oscar Rodriguez was credited with the game-winning RBI.
The relief pitching was outstanding for STU as
Andrew Denis,
Devon Stubbings,
Anthony Justiniano and
Brandon Valentin combined for 6.2 shutout innings, allowing just four hits as a unit. Denis pitched 3.2 innings in relief, allowing just two hits while striking out four and walking none. Stubbings pitched one shutout inning, allowing no hits. Justiniano and Valentin each pitched one-hit shutout innings with Valentin earning the win.
Arauz started the game and pitched 3.1 innings, allowing two runs on four hits with three strikeouts and two walks.
The Bobcats were on the scoreboard first bringing in two runs after a hard hit line drive double to dead center from Gutierrez brought in both
David Palenzuela and
German Morales.
The Seahawks brought the game to a 2-2 tie in the top of the fourth and jumped out to a 4-2 lead in the top of the eighth, but St. Thomas answered immediately at the bottom of the eighth to eventually send the game to extra innings.
In the bottom of the eighth, Palenzuela hit a grounder to second bringing in the RBI to score
Michael Sanchez. With Gutierrez at pitch, a wild pitch was thrown in which pinch runner
Daniel Lowry came speeding on through to home plate, bringing a tie for the Bobcats late in the game.
St. Thomas returns to action on Wednesday night vs. Ave Maria at Paul Demie Mainieri Field. Game time is set for 6 p.m.
