St. Thomas finished the week 3-1, improving to 26-10 on the season. Let's give you the rundown of last week and preview the upcoming schedule.
STU DEFEATS BARRY IN ROLLER COASTER WIN
Tuesday, the Bobcats made a trip over to Barry University where STU jumped ahead 4-0 in the first inning on RBI hits by
Oscar Rodriguez and
Randy Oliva. In the second inning, the Bobcats added four more runs highlighted by a Rodriguez single that drove in
Michael Sanchez and
Orlando Rivera. After the Bucs made it 8-2 in the bottom of the second, STU rallied for three more runs, two of those coming off the powerful bat of
Michael Centeno with a two-run homer to left. Centeno continues his rampage in the home run department.
The early runs would be crucial for St. Thomas as Barry made a comeback. After the sixth inning, a once 11-2 lead flipped in favor of the Bucs, 12-11. With momentum favoring their opponent, the resilient Bobcats struck in the eighth inning. Centeno put his team on his back and hit his second homer of the game to tie the game at 12.
Brandon Paez singled home Rodriguez to retake the lead. Sanchez doubled in two runs, Rivera singled home Paez and Sanchez, and Centeno finished off the night with an RBI double to put the Bobcats ahead 18-12. STU won the game 18-14.
BOBCATS WIN SERIES VS WARNER
After dropping the first game of the series to Warner on Friday night, the Bobcats were resilient and fought their way to a series win by sweeping the Saturday doubleheader over Sun Conference foe Warner. St. Thomas took the first game Saturday 7-1, and were led by a quality pitching performance by
Erne Valdes, who worked seven strong innings, gave up just one hit and a run to Warner.
James Spatafora and
Kendrick Gutierrez were the offensive stars of the game. Game two wasn't as comfortable for STU as they were forced into extra innings in a 3-3 game, but prevailed off of an RBI double from Spatafora in the 10th inning. The series win should give the team a ton of confidence heading into this week's slate of games.Â
COACH PEREZ EARNS 300TH WIN
Two weeks ago, with a win over USCB, Head Coach of the Bobcats
Jorge Perez earned his 300th win as skipper of the school. Through nine seasons at STU, Coach Perez is 304-104, a full 200 more wins than he has losses. Under Coach Perez, the Bobcats have accumulated a .745 winning percentage.
