MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. -
Jacobo Nieto won a three-set thriller in the final match of the day to give 18th ranked St. Thomas (4-5, 4-1 TSC) a 5-4 victory over conference rival Southeastern (4-5, 2-3 TSC) Saturday at the Bobcat Tennis Courts.
It marked the fourth straight Sun Conference win for the Bobcats who debuted in the NAIA Coaches Poll this week.
The two teams were tied 4-4 with only Nieto's match in number six yet to finish. With the sun already set, Nieto and SEU's Noah Rawls battled with both the men's and women's teams of the two schools looking on.
Rawls edged Nieto in the first set 7-6, but the junior from Coral Gables responded with a 7-6 win in set number two. The match continued back and forth through set number three with Nieto emerging victorious 7-5.
STU also garnered wins by
Fabrice Bissainthe (no. 3 singles),
Dimitri Bird (no. 4) and
Rasmus Lindscrom (no. 5). Nieto and
Juan Carlos Villamizar-Abia teamed up for a win in number three doubles.
On the women's side, the Bobcats won as well with a three-setter helping determine the outcome. With the 6-3 win, the 22nd ranked Bobcats (4-5, 4-1 TSC) also won their fourth consecutive league match.
The Bobcats trailed 2-1 after doubles play with STU's lone doubles win coming in the number two spot with
Cynthia Diaz and
Cassandra Lemieux winning 8-6.
Five Bobcats would then win on singles play with victories by Lemieux (no. 1),
Victoria Slavina (no. 2),
Ksenia Slavina (no. 3) and
Marine Uyttenhove (no. 6).
The victory was clinched in a three-setter in number five singles as Diaz came from behind to win 3-6, 7-5, 10-7.
