MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – The St. Thomas University eSports team (3-1) defeated Texas A&M University in five matches on Monday night from the Fernandez Family Center.
The rules of "Hearthstone" enable the opposing team to scout the decks of their opponents and determine their strategy based off the cards. The TAMU eSports team used an OTK deck, while the Bobcats used a control deck.
The control deck, is the strategy St. Thomas uses in order to best control the match and determine how the match plays out.
Texas A&M deployed a "Warlock" deck and defeated STU's "Shaman" deck, to take a 1-0 lead early in the match. The Bobcats found themselves trailing and relied on a "Warlock" deck of their own to bring the match back to even. The strategy worked, as the STU "Warlock" outmatched the Aggie "Warlock" as the Bobcats tied the match at 1-1. In a crucial third set, in order to break the tie, STU turned to the "Shaman" once again, however the result remained the same as Texas A&M took the set victory to put St. Thomas down 1-2.
In need of a dramatic comeback once again in order to win the match and move closer to the regional tournament. STU turned to their "Warrior" deck to bring the match to even as they defeated the TAMU "Warlock" to tie the match. The decisive fifth set, saw both teams tied at 2-2, STU relied on their "Shaman" deck once again, the third-time was the charm as the "Shaman" led St. Thomas to their third consecutive win as the "Shaman" defeated TAMU's "Warlock".
St. Thomas with their third consecutive win, moved into the top-60 in the South Region rankings for "Hearthstone". The Bobcats now move to just two wins away from qualifying for the Regional Tournament as they prepare for their next match-up on Monday, October 29
