STU jumped out to a 3-0 lead after doubles play which began with
Rasmus Lindstrom and Francisco Velasquez winning no. 2 doubles 8-1.
Kevin Cubela and
Mauricio Fernandez then won no. 1 doubles 8-6 which was followed by a tight 9-7 win in number three doubles by Fabrice Bissainthe and
Dimitri Bird.
In singles play, Velasquez jumped on his competition with a 6-0, 6-1 win in number three singles. Lindstrom then clinched the STU victory with a 6-2, 6-2 win in number two singles. Bird (number 4 singles) won 7-5, 7-5, while Fabrice Bissainthe won in number five singles 6-1, 6-1.
The 22nd ranked women's team was not as fortunate, losing to Webber International 5-4.
The Bobcats fell behind 2-1 after doubles play with the only doubles win coming by way of
Cynthia Diaz and
Naomi Maehama who won 8-0 in number three doubles. The Bobcats fought valiantly to come from behind in singles competition with winning three of the four matches with wins by
Victoria Slavina, Diaz and Maehama.
The Men's and Women's Tennis teams return to action on Saturday, Feb. 24 with a conference match vs. Warner at the STU Tennis Courts.
