STU SWEEPS DOUBLEHEADER AND SERIES OVER CLAFLIN

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. - St. Thomas (4-0) swept the double header by the scores of 14-4 and 3-1 to sweep the series over Claflin (0-3)  on Saturday, February 3rd at Paul Demie Mainieri Field.

In game one of the doubleheader, starter Chris Rodriguez went five innings for the Bobcats with two strikeouts, and only allowing one hit. Rodriguez did not allow a hit until his fifth inning of work.

After Rodriguez's day was done, the bullpen continued to shut down the Panther's offense. Efforts from Eddie Escribano, Alex Sarmiento, Tyeler Checkley and Tyler Morales protected the lead the St. Thomas offense was able to provide again.

The Bobcats offense continued to rake and scored double-digit runs for the third straight game on the season, totaling 14 runs on a 15 hit afternoon in game two of the series. The potent offense of St. Thomas was led today by Sergio Lopez (2-3, 4 RBIs).

In game two of the doubleheader and the final game of the series, Rene Arauz started for the Bobcats. Arauz also carried a perfect game into his fifth inning on the day, adding five strikeouts while only allowing two hits on the afternoon.

St. Thomas benefited from not only a lights out performance from Arauz, but the bullpen shut the door against Claflin in the sixth and seventh innings. Sawyer Losey pitched the sixth inning to earn a hold. Closer Erne Valdes slammed the door in the seventh and final inning of the game, striking out three of the four batters he faced.

The Bobcats return to action on Friday, February 9th, against Barry University at 6 p.m. at Paul Demie Mainieri Field.
