Box Score 2 MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – The St. Thomas Men's Tennis team opened its 2018 Sun Conference schedule with a resounding 9-0 win over 18th ranked SCAD-Savannah on Saturday afternoon at the STU Tennis Courts.
The Bobcats earned three wins, one by default, in doubles play to take a 3-0 lead to make an early statement. In number one doubles,
Kevin Cubela and
Mauricio Fernandez won 8-5 over the Bees' top double team.
Rasmus Lindstrom and Francisco Velasquez won 8-3 in number two doubles, ensuring the sweep in doubles play as the number three team of
Dimitri Bird and
Fabrice Bissainthe won by default.
Leading 3-0 in doubles play, the Bobcats did not lose a set in singles competition to take the 9-0 sweep. Cubela won handily in number one singles 6-0, 6-1. Lindstrom battled to a 7-5 win in the first set of number two singles play, then ran away with the second set 6-2. Velasquez took care of business 6-3, 6-3 in number three singles. In no. 4 singles, Bird was dominant with a 6-1, 6-2 victory. Bissainthe completed the sweep in singles play with a strong 6-1, 6-2 win. Fernandez won number six singles by default to give the Bobcats the 9-0 team win.
On the women's side, 25th ranked St. Thomas fell to #5 ranked SCAD Savannah 7-2. The Bobcats earned wins by the no. 2 doubles team of
Victoria Slavina and Mariah Bastos (8-4) as well as a win by Natdeilys de Armas Acosta(6-2, 6-4) in no. 6 singles.
Sun Conference play continues for both the Bobcat Men's and Women's Tennis teams on Saturday, Feb. 10 vs. Coastal Georgia in Brunswick, Ga. Competition begins at 9 a.m.
