WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – Top seed St. Thomas (53-7) fell to no. 5 seed Webber International (35-22) 1-0 in the winner-take-all championship game of The Sun Conference Championship Tournament on Monday at FITTEAM Ballpark of the Palm Beaches.
St. Thomas, the Sun Conference regular-season champions and ranked no. 3 in the NAIA Top-25 Coaches' Poll, will now await the announcement of the NAIA National Championship Opening Round pairings this Thursday at 4 p.m.
The Bobcats registered a season-low two hits in the defeat as Webber's' Juan Terron pitched a complete game shutout to stifle STU's offense. It marked the first shutout against the Bobcats since Feb. 20, 2015, snapping a 231-game streak without a shutout.
STU's pitching held the Warriors to one run on six hits with the only WIU run coming across in the sixth inning. Miguel Rodriguez started for the Bobcats and went four shutout innings, allowing two hits and striking out three.Â
Tyler Morales went 1.2 innings, allowing one run on two hits.Â
Erne Valdes entered the game in the sixth and continued through the eighth. Valdes went 2.1 innings, allowing no runs on two hits and striking out four.  Â
In the first game of the day, a must-win situation for the Bobcats, STU erupted for an 11-0 victory.Â
Daniel Lowry went 3-for-4 with two RBI, Sergio Lopez was 3-for-5 with an RBI and
Nick Izquierdo was 3-for-5 with an RBI to lead the STU offense.   Also registering multi-hit games were Jackie Urbaez (2-4, RS), Chris Garabedian (2-4, 2 RS), and
Oscar Rodriguez (2-4, RBI, 2 RS).
Danger Guevara started the must-win game for the Bobcats and pitched 5.1 shutout innings allowing four hits while striking out three.Â
Alex Sarmiento pitched the final 3.2 innings to close out the combined shutout, allowing just two hits and striking out three.
