#4 BOBCATS OPEN WARNER INVITATIONAL WITH DOUBLEHEADER SWEEP

LAKE WALES, Fla. (March 11, 2021) - No. 4 St. Thomas University (14-7) Bobcats Baseball began play in the Warner University Invitational on Thursday morning, taking on Judson University (0-6) and Brewton-Parker College in a doubleheader. No. 4 STU earned an extra-innings victory over Judson, 7-6, and beat Brewton-Parker, 14-4, in the second half of the doubleheader.

  • JU opened the scoring with an RBI single with two outs in the top of the first inning.
  • Lopez led off the bottom of the first inning with a walk and advanced to third on a single from Rangel.
  • Rivero tied the game with a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring Lopez.
  • The Eagles tacked on their second run in the top of the second inning with a sacrifice fly, taking a 2-1 lead over STU.
  • Fernando Medina relieved Machado in the top of the third inning with two outs.
  • The first batter Medina faced singled to left-field and scored the third Eagles run of the game.
  • Lopez cut the Bobcats deficit to just a run, with the second STU sacrifice fly of the game, putting the score at 3-2.
  • Judson added another run in the top of the fifth with a solo home run, taking a 4-2 lead.
  • Montesino and Lowry recorded back-to-back singles in the bottom of the fifth inning.
  • Rangel added the third STU single of the inning, scoring Montesino and putting the score at 4-3.
  • STU tied the game again, as Lowry scored on a wild pitch.
  • Luis Gonzalez entered in the sixth inning for STU, with one out.
  • St. Thomas left the bases loaded in the bottom of the sixth inning.
  • The game went into extra innings, with neither team scoring in the eighth inning.
  • JU took a 5-4 lead once again with a sacrifice fly in the top of the ninth.
  • Lopez tied the game with his second sacrifice fly in the bottom of the ninth inning.
  • Jason Grana relieved Gonzalez in the tenth inning.
  • JU plated a run on an RBI single off of Grana.
  • Guerra tied the game in his first plate appearance, driving in Rangel with a single to left field.
  • Robin Fernandez lined a single to right field, scoring Guerra and giving STU the first walk-off win of the campaign.

  • Brewton-Parker plated two runs in the bottom of the first inning, taking a 2-0 lead over STU.
  • St. Thomas quickly responded with a five-run top of the second inning.
  • Montesino brought in Lowry to put STU on the board with an RBI double.
  • Guerra tied the game, 2-2, with a single to right field, scoring Montesino.
  • Lopez followed with a single, bringing in Guerra as STU took a 3-2 lead.
  • Rivero recorded the fourth consecutive STU hit, scoring Rangel and Lopez, putting the score at 5-2.
  • BPC tallied their third run, taking advantage of a STU error.
  • Guerra continued to swing well on the day, bringing in Montesino and Khawly with a two-run single to center, extending the Bobcats led to 7-3.
  • Lopez padded the STU lead with a two-run double, scoring Thompson and Guerra.
  • Andy Quintana relieved Rivero in the fifth inning, working around a lead-off walk with a double play and a strikeout.
  • Christian Dearman was next out of the bullpen for STU, entering in the sixth inning.

  • Khawly and A. Fernandez capped off the five-run outburst as STU took a 14-4 lead into the final frame. 
  • Dearman sent the Barons down in order, as STU swept the first doubleheader of the Warner Invitational.
