#14 STU EARNS TSC SERIES WIN OVER AMU

AVE MARIA, Fla. (April 10, 2021) - No. 14 St. Thomas University (STU) Bobcats Baseball (26-16, 12-6 TSC) split the Sun Conference doubleheader against the Ave Maria University Gyrenes. STU dropped game one 8-7 on a Gyrene walk-off and took the series victory with an 8-3 win in the finale.

  • Despite recording two hits in the first two innings, the STU offense totaled five strikeouts.
  • Back-to-back hits from the Gyrenes resulted in the game's first run, as AMU took a 1-0 lead.
  • Ave Maria added a second run in the bottom of the second inning with an RBI groundout.
  • Mondejar drove in Rangel, with an RBI single, giving STU its first run of the game in the top of the fourth inning. 
  • AMU added two more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, taking a 4-1 lead.
  • As a pinch-hitter, Chris Schoeller drove in Thompson and Montesino, putting the score at 4-3, in the top of the fifth inning.
  • Ave Maria got to Christian Dearman in the bottom of the sixth inning, plating two more runs to take a 6-3 lead.
  • Fernandez hit a solo home run in the top of the seventh inning, bringing the Bobcats within two.
  • Two consecutive walks, followed by a Miguel single to right field, loaded the bases for STU.
  • Rivero came through with a two-out bases-clearing double, giving St. Thomas a 7-6 lead. 
  • Jason Grana made his second appearance of the weekend, relieving Dearman, in the bottom of the eighth inning.
  • Ave Maria tied the game, 7-7, with an RBI single.
  • The Gyrenes loaded the bases in the bottom of the ninth, as STU turned to Jose Ledesma.
  • After inducing two outs, AMU walked off with an RBI single, and took an 8-7 win in game two of the series.

  • Cabrera recorded two strikeouts in the first inning to start his day in game three. 
  • Rivero and Mondejar both reached base to begin the top of the second inning for STU, but the Bobcats were unable to capitalize. 
  • After tallying the first two outs in the bottom of the second inning, AMU took a 2-0 lead with a two-run home run. 
  • Cabrera added two more strikeouts to his line in the bottom of the third inning. 
  • Rangel was hit by a pitch, and moved to second on a Rivero walk, putting two Bobcats on base for Mondejar.
  • Mondejar hit his second home run of the weekend, giving STU a 3-2 lead over Ave Maria.
  • AMU tied the game with a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the fifth inning. 
  • Mondejar added his second home run of the game, reclaiming the lead for STU.
  • Robin Fernandez, pinch-hitting for Lowry, followed a Montesino double with his own to give St. Thomas a 6-3 advantage.
  • Estevez led off the top of the seventh with a single, and scored on an RBI double from Rivero.
  • Khawly singled to right field, bringing in Rivero, as STU took an 8-3 lead.
  • Fernando Medina struck out two in the bottom of the eighth inning. 
  • STU sealed the Sun Conference series victory with an 8-3 win.
