#14 STU DROPS SERIES OPENER AT FMU

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (April 2, 2021) - No. 14 St. Thomas University (STU) Bobcats Baseball (22-14, 8-5 TSC) dropped the Sun Conference Series Opener in the "Battle of Miami Gardens" to the Florida Memorial University Lions, 5-2, on Friday evening from Harry T. Moore Field on the campus of FMU.

The loss for the Bobcats in the Sun Conference series opener snapped a 35-game winning streak over the Lions, dating back to April 10, 2009.

Game Notes
  • Pino set the Lions down in order, to open the ballgame, tallying his first strikeout of the game in the first inning.
  • Florida Memorial plated three runs in the bottom of the second inning, taking the lead on a two-run single to left field.
  • The Bobcats struck out six times in the first three innings.
  • FMU tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the third inning, with a two-out double and a passed ball, taking a 5-0 lead.
  • STU loaded the bases in top of the fourth inning, as Rangel, Rivero, and Estevez reached base but the Bobcats were unable to score.
  • A one-out double by Mondejar gave STU another runner in scoring position; however, the senior could not score as St. Thomas grounded into its second consecutive inning-ending double-play. 
  • Pino was relieved in the bottom of the seventh inning by Jose Machado.
  • Machado tallied two strikeouts to keep the score 5-0.
  • Gus Guerra led off the top of the ninth with a pinch-hit single and advanced to third on Mondejar's second double of the game.
  • Daniel Lowry was hit by a pitch to load the bases for Lopez.
  • Lopez drew a walk, as Guerra scored, giving STU its first run of the game.
  • Montesino hit a sacrifice fly, driving in Joel Franco, and put the score at 5-2.
  • Rangel flew out to left field to end the game, as the Lions snapped a 35-game losing streak to STU.
