BATS CARRY #14 STU PAST FMU

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (April 3, 2021) - No. 14 St. Thomas University (STU) Bobcats Baseball (24-14, 10-5 TSC) won both games of the Sun Conference doubleheader against Florida Memorial University on Saturday afternoon from Harry T. Moore Field. The Bobcats took game one of the doubleheader, 7-2, in extra innings and run-ruled the Lions 12-3 in game two.

  • Thompson led off the game with a single up the middle and quickly moved into scoring position after stealing second base. 
  • Rangel walked, and STU tallied the first run of the game with a steal of home from Thompson. 
  • FMU wasted no time in tying the game, bringing in the equalizer on an RBI triple to center field. 
  • Gonzalez was relieved by Jason Grana in the sixth inning after allowing back-to-back runners to reach base for the Lions. 
  • Florida Memorial took a 2-1 lead with an RBI single with two outs in the inning. 
  • STU tied the game with a sacrifice fly in the top of the seventh, as Thompson scored A. Fernandez. 
  • Grana kept the Florida Memorial Lions off the scoreboard through the ninth inning as the game went into extras.
  • With the bases loaded in the bottom of the tenth, Grana forced a groundball and preserved the 2-2 tie. 
  • Khawly led off the top of the 11th inning with a single and moved into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt from A. Fernandez. 
  • Lopez broke the tie with a double to left field, scoring Khawly.
  • Thompson and Guerra both reached base, loading the bases for Rangel.
  • Rangel reached on an error, as Lopez scored, giving STU a 4-2 lead.
  • Rivero drove in Thompson with an RBI single to right field.
  • Guerra scored on a wild pitch, and Daniel Miguel capped the five-run 11th inning with an RBI groundout, as the Bobcats took a 7-2 lead.
  • Jose Ledesma entered for Grana, recording four strikeouts in the inning as STU evened the series with the 7-2 victory.

  • Florida Memorial got to Cabrera in the first inning, scoring the game's first run with a sacrifice fly.
  • STU tied the game in the top of the second inning, as Lowry grounded into a double play, but Khawly came into score.
  • Rivero and Estevez, each single in the top of the third inning, bringing up Khawly, 
  • Khawly drove in both runs with a triple to center field and came into score on an error, as STU took a 4-1 lead. 
  • Cabrera settled in, holding the Lions off the scoreboard through five innings. 
  • Estevez tripled to right field to start the top of the fifth inning and was courtesy ran for by Joel Franco.
  • Franco scored on an RBI single from Khawly, giving the senior three RBIs for the game. 
  • Guerra drove in two more runs for St. Thomas, singling to left field and plating A. Fernandez and Orlando Borroto, as STU took a 7-1 lead.
  • Miguel brought in Lowry with a sacrifice fly to center field.
  • Rangel and Rivero each tallied RBI hits, extending the Bobcats lead to 11-1.
  • Estevez capped the inning with his second hit, this time an RBI single, which scored Rivero as STU took a 12-1 advantage.
  • Cabrera added two more strikeouts in the fifth inning, bringing his total to six for the game.
  • JJ Galvis relieved Cabrera in the sixth, setting the Lions down in order. 
  • FMU scored two in the bottom of the seventh, staving off the run-rule, putting the score at 12-3.
