#18 STU DROPS TSC SERIES OF THE WEEK OPENER TO #2 SEU

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (April 23, 2021) - No. 18 St. Thomas University (STU) Bobcats Baseball (30-17) lost the opener in the Sun Conference Series of the Week against No. 2 Southeastern University 10-6 on Friday night from Paul Demie Mainieri Field. 

Before the game, St. Thomas University honored former coach and Bobcat Hall of Famer Manny Mantrana with a moment of silence following his passing. STU Athletics offers its condolences to Coach Mantrana's wife, daughter, and family.

Game Notes

  • Pino, the Bobcats ace, opened the game with back-to-back strikeouts.
  • SEU responded with two straight hits, threatening to score the game's first runs with both runners in scoring position. 
  • Pino induced a groudout to first base, ending the Fire threat.
  • Montesino recorded the first hit of the game for STU, and stole second base.
  • A Rangel walk, followed by a fielder's choice groundout from Mondejar, put a pair of runners in scoring position for the Bobcats. 
  • STU was unable to capitalize, leaving the score at 0-0.
  • The Fire had five consecutive hitters reach base and only plated one run to take a 1-0 lead over STU in the top of the second inning. 
  • SEU added two more runs in the top of the third inning, extending its lead to 3-0.
  • Thompson led off the bottom of the third with a walk, and advanced to third as Montesino singled to load the bases.
  • Rivero singled to left field, scoring Lopez, as STU was on the scoreboard for the first time. 
  • Pino induced a double-play ball to end the fourth inning.
  • A. Fernandez plated the second run of the game for St. Thomas with an RBI single through the right side, putting the score at 3-2.
  • Lopez drove in the tying and go-ahead run with a two-run single with the bases loaded, as STU took a 4-3 lead.
  • Southeastern led off the top of the fifth inning with a solo home run, tying the game 4-4.
  • Gus Guerra gave STU back the lead with an RBI groundout, as Rivero scored.
  • Jason Grana entered in relief for the Bobcats in the top of the sixth inning, retiring the first three batters he faced.
  • SEU reclaimed the lead, 6-5, with a two-run home run in the top of the seventh inning. 
  • JJ Galvis entered for STU in the top of the eighth inning, inheriting a bases-loaded jam.
  • A two-run double by the Fire put the score at 8-5.
  • STU used four pitchers in the top of the eighth inning, and ended the frame trailing 10-5. 
  • Rangel plated Lopez to put the score at 10-6 in the bottom of the ninth inning. 
  • STU dropped the Sun Conference Series of the Week opener, 10-6
