#18 BOBCATS PUT OUT #2 FIRE TO TAKE SERIES

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (April 24, 2021) - No. 18 St. Thomas University (STU) Bobcats Baseball finished regular-season Sun Conference play with a doubleheader against No. 2 Southeastern University on Saturday afternoon from Paul Demie Mainieri Field. STU won game one 6-2 and came back to complete the doubleheader sweep and win the series with a 10-8 victory in the finale.

Game Notes

  • Coipel opened the game with a strikeout, and following a one-out single, induced an inning-ending double-play.
  • Khawly tallied his fourth home run of the season in the bottom of the second inning, giving St. Thomas a 2-0 lead over the Fire.
  •  Coipel rolled his second double-play of the game to end the top of the third inning. 
  • Lopez launched his first home run of the season in the bottom of the fourth, giving STU a 3-0 lead.
  • After allowing two consecutive hits in the top of the fifth, Coipel rolled his third double-play of the game as he continued to hold the Fire off the scoreboard.
  • Two doubles in the top of the sixth inning allowed SEU to get on the scoreboard for the first time and trailed 3-1.
  • Mondejar extended the STU lead with an RBI single, scoring Rangel in the bottom of the sixth,
  • SEU cut the deficit in half with an RBI single in the top of the seventh inning, as Jose Ledesma relieved Coipel.
  • Khawly led off the bottom of the seventh inning with a single, and Erik Estevez added a pinch-hit single.
  • Lopez was hit by a pitch, loading the bases for Rangel.
  • Rangel drove in two with a single into the left-center field gap, bringing the lead to 6-2 in favor of STU. 
  • Ledesma closed out the ninth inning, striking out two, as the Bobcats tied the series 1-1 with the 6-2 victory.

  • SEU took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning with a solo home run.
  • The Fire added four runs in the top of the second inning with a pair of two-run singles, putting the score at 5-0.
  • Montesino hit his third home run of the season, getting the Bobcats on the board with a two-run home run.
  • Southeastern hit their second home run of the day, taking a 6-2 lead.
  • Khawly singled through the right side of the infiled with the passes loaded to score two runs, putting the score at 6-4.
  • STU added a third run on the inning, as the Bobcats trailed 6-5.
  • Rivero tied the game in the bottom of the fifth inning with an RBI single, scoring Lopez.
  • A two-run single with the bases loaded by the Fire gave SEU an 8-6 advantage in the top of the sixth inning.
  • Christian Dearman entered in the top of the seventh inning for the Bobcats.
  • Mondejar led off the bottom of the eighth with a single, and advanced to second on an error by the Southeastern left fielder.
  • Montesino doubled to center field, scoring Mondejar, as STU trailed 8-7.
  • SEU committed two errors on the same play, as Montesino scored from second, tying the game 8-8.
  • Guerra and Lopez each added RBI hits, capping a four-run inning for STU as the Bobcats took a 10-8 lead into the ninth inning.
  • Dearman sealed the series win with a strikeout, as the Bobcats rallied to take both games in the doubleheader over the No. 2 Fire.
