#12 BOBCATS DROP GAME ONE OF TSC TOURNAMENT

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (May 6, 2021) - Second-seed St. Thomas University (STU) Bobcats Baseball opened the Sun Conference Tournament with an 18-16 loss against the fifth-seeded Warner University Royals on Thursday evening from the FITTEAM Ballpark of the Palm Beaches.

Game Notes

  • WU opened the Sun Conference tournament with back-to-back extra-base hits and quickly led 1-0. 
  • Mondejar gave the Bobcats a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the first inning with a three-run home run, his tenth of the season.
  • Pino struck out two Royals in the second inning.
  • With the bases loaded in the bottom of the second, Rivero lined a two-run single to left field to extend the STU lead to 5-1.
  • Later in the inning, Rangel scored on a wild pitch, extending the Bobcat lead to 6-1.
  • An over two-hour weather delay paused the game in the top of the third inning. 
  • Fernando Medina entered on the mound, following the delay, for STU.
  • WU tallied six consecutive hits to start the third inning, scoring four runs, before Christian Dearman came into pitch for St. Thomas.
  • The Royals capped an eight-run inning with a grand slam, taking a 9-6 lead.
  • Guerra brought in Khawly with an RBI single in the bottom of the third.
  • Dearman held WU off the scoreboard in the top of the fourth inning.
  •  STU loaded the bases to begin the bottom of fourth inning, with the first three runners reaching base.
  • St. Thomas cut the deficit with a run in the inning; but could not tie the game, trailing 9-8. 
  • Warner hit their second grand slam of the game in the top of the fifth, taking a 13-8 lead.
  • Robert Touron relieved Dearman, and could not record an out, as all five batters he faced reached base.
  • WU ended the top of the fifth leading 15-8, as Richard Sanchez recorded the final three outs of the inning. 
  • The Bobcats added two more runs in the bottom half of the fifth, putting the score at 15-10. 
  • After recording the first two outs in the top of the sixth, the Royals scored two on a two-run double, taking a 17-10 advantage.
  • A three-run home run by Lopez brought the Bobcats within four, down 17-13.
  • Luis Gonzalez came into pitch for St. Thomas in the top of the seventh inning and kept the Royals off the scoreboard.
  • Two more runs scored for STU in the bottom of the seventh inning, putting the score at 17-15.
  • Estevez scored Thompson with a sacrifice fly, and Montesino scored on a double play. 
  • Warner added an insurance run in the top of the eighth inning with a sacrifice fly, taking an 18-15 lead.
  • Montesino and Khawly opened the bottom of the ninth inning with two consecutive singles.
  • Daniel Miguel lined a pinch-hit single to right field, scoring Montesino to put the score at 18-16. 
  • Lopez worked the count full, and took a walk to load the bases for Rangel, with two outs in the inning.
  • STU was unable to tie the game, and dropped the Sun Conference Tournament series opener to Warner, 18-16.

Second-seed St. Thomas takes on regular-season champion Southeastern University in an elimination game on Friday afternoon from the FITTEAM Ballpark of the Palm Beaches.
