RED HOT OFFENSE FOR #11 ST. THOMAS SECURES SWEEP OF #20 KEISER IN SUN PLAY

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (March 18-19, 2022) – The 11th ranked St. Thomas University Baseball team got their first Sun Conference series sweep over 20th ranked Keiser University on the road at Silvester Field on Friday and Saturday. This extends STU's winning streak to 11-straight. The Bobcats outscored the Seahawks 39-16 over the three-game span.
 
The Bobcats have a 48-21-1 record against the Seahawks, with STU winning six of the last 10. This is the first time since 2016 that STU has swept Keiser in Sun Conference play. The Bobcats now have the season series over KU 3-1 as the Bobcats dropped a midweek earlier on the year.
 
Game One Notes
  • Game one was a shootout as both offenses erupted for a combined 23 runs on Friday afternoon.
  • Keiser opened the bottom of the first inning putting up six runs off four hits to run out pitcher Gio Soto in the first inning.
  • Christopher Coipel took over in the first and threw five innings only allowing three earned runs off six hits while striking out six.
  • Joel Rivero came into relief throwing 2.2 innings striking out six and allowing two runs off two hits.
  • Jose Machado and Fernando Medina closed out the game for the Bobcats not allowing a single run in the final frame.
  • As for the offense, Jack Khawly went perfect at the plate going 4-for-4 with two RBI, and a hit by pitch.
  • The Bobcats chipped away at the 6-0 deficit putting up crooked numbers in each inning from the third to the seventh.
  • In the fifth, STU took their first lead and did not look back scoring four in the sixth and two in the seventh to secure the victory.
  • The offense scored 13-runs one just 11 hits, four of which were doubles.
 
Game Two Notes
  • The offense stayed red hot in game two scoring 19 runs off 15 hits.
  • Richard Sanchez held the Seahawks scoreless for six frames punching out 13-hitters, walking two, and only surrendering four hits.
  • Jordan Rodriguez came into close out the game throwing a scoreless frame striking out one and giving up one hit.
  • St. Thomas scored seven runs in the top of the second to get the early gap on the scoreboard.
  • Chris Schoeller had the big blast sending a grand slam to left center to put the game out of reach at 15-0 in the top of the fifth.
  • 10 different Bobcat hitters recorded a hit seven being from the starting lineup.
  • Four Bobcats had multi-hit games (Ezequiel Valdez, Robin Fernandez, Chris Schoeller, and Brian Garcia).
 
Game Three Notes
  • With the series sweep on the line, Crosby Bringhurst was given the starting nod for the Bobcats.
  • Bringhurst went 5.1 innings striking out three and allowing three runs on seven hits while walking two.
  • Jorge Arias came into relief for two innings and struck out one giving up two runs on two hits.
  • Fernando Medina shut down the final 1.2 innings striking out four, walking three, and giving up one run on two hits.
  • Keiser went through five different pitchers in the final game as the Bobcat offense forced a fifth inning exit for the starter.
  • Andrew Fernandez homered to left field to get the offense going in the top of the third to make it 3-0.
  • Keiser scored two in the bottom of the fourth to make it a one-run game.
  • The Bobcats scored two in the sixth off a hit by pitch and wild pitch to make it 5-2.
  • The Seahawks tied the game in the bottom of the eighth by scoring three runs.
  • Chris Schoeller singled to left field to score Valdez for the game winning run in the top of the ninth.
 
Up Next
St. Thomas will host friendly neighborhood foe, Florida Memorial in non-conference midweek action on Tuesday, March 22 at 6 p.m. at Paul Demie Mainieri Field for the first of an eight-game home stand.
