MIAMI GARDENS, Fla- The STU women's soccer team took on Johnson and Wales University Friday afternoon on Bobcat Field. Johnson and Wales came in with a 0-8 record and a 0-4 record in the conference. STU came into the match with a 5-4 record and was 2-2 in the conference. STU won the match 6-0
Johnson and Wales would take advantage of a blunder in the back with a quick shot on goal in the first minute of play that was wide of the goal. STU would answer back with a shot on goal from Miranda Goransson that was blocked out of play for a goal kick. STU would attack again in the 5th minute with two shots on goal that were both saved by Johnson and Wales goalkeeper Elizabeth Haley. STU would attack yet again in the 8th minute with a shot on goal by Monica Lozano that went wide. STU would continue their assault with a shot on goal by Danelle Nguyen. Sara Mira would give it a go with another shot that was saved. Miranda Goransson would give it another try with a shot in the 15th minute that was saved.
STU would take 16 shots on goal at the 20 minute mark. STU was dominant in possession which led to all the shots. The first breakthrough of the match would come in the 29th with a whipped corner kick from Melony Poviones that found Miranda Goransson for a header at the back post that put STU up 1-0. Melony gave her thoughts on the goal after the match “It was just a double pass, we knew we were going to get one today”, Poviones said. STU would take a whopping 32 shots in the first half. STU would be awarded a penalty kick in the 45th minute for a hand ball in the penalty area. Johnson and Wales' Jenine Miller was sent off for the offense. The first half would come to a close up 2-0.
STU would score a spectacular goal in the 51st minute from distance by Silvana Dodero. It was a beautiful whipped kick that beat goalkeeper Elizabeth Haley in the upper left hand corner of the goal post for the match's third goal. STU would score another goal in the 53rd minute this time by Melony Piovoness with an assist from Miranda Goransson off a wall pass to put STU up 4-0. STU would continue to dominate possession in the second half and continue the assault on the Johnson and Wales goal. STU would go on to score 2 more goals to make it 6-0.
Johnson and Wales coach Eric Dobrzanski gave his assessment after the match. “We came out flat and unprepared and it showed, Dobrzanski said. And we have to come out awake from the beginning.”
After the game, STU head coach Michelle Smith noted, “We got the goals, I don't think we played our best but we did what we needed to do.”
